For Musicians & Singers

The Alexander Technique is a proven psycho-physical approach to help musicians take care of their health and improve their skills. An Alexander teacher can help you free your breath and to become aware of ways in which you are introducing unnecessary tension into your activities. Using words and subtle manual guidance, you are encourage you towards a more integrated and relaxed way of using yourself in practice and performance.

The Alexander Technique can be sustaining; it is something that if learned well, can be carried along with you for the rest of your life. It gives you confidence to be who you are when you are up in front of an audience.

As we learn to release excess muscular tension and to allow our bodies to be more in balance, this allows our postural system to function as it should, and enables us to move more in accord with how nature designed us. We may experience a lightness and ease which we had forgotten was even possible and find there is less ongoing strain on our body, leading to reduced pain, discomfort and damge in our activities,  tigether with improved breathing and, and greater energy and  vitality.

Alexander students rid themselves of bad postural habits and are helped to reach with their bodies and minds, an enviable degree of freedom of expression.

Other Benefits

A further result of the release of unnecessary tension is that our ‘kinaesthetic sense’ (how we perceive ourselves in activity) becomes very much more accurate and we experience increased sensitivity to subtle differentiations in ourselves and our environment. Increased physical freedom and more accurate feedback allows for greater spontaneity and responsiveness in relation to co-performers or to one’s own process. In addition, many performers have reported that the increased internal support and reduced tension they find through the Alexander Technique makes them less nervous and more confident in performance.
