The Alexander Technique offers an intelligent and profound approach to body awareness, self-care, and emotional and personal growth. It helps us understand and experience at a deep level how our body and mind are designed to work together so we can let go of unnecessary physical and mental tension, feel more in tune with ourselves and with life, find greater vitality and confidence, and experience less pain, discomfort and stress.
In the sessions we work with everyday movements such as sitting, standing, speaking and walking to explore breathing, balance, support and flow. This allows us to understand how we tend to get in own way, and to become aware of ways of moving and being which are not helpful for us so we can learn to access more free, relaxed and beneficial ones. Letting go of physical tension can also allow us to let go of emotional blocks and pain from the past which are held in the body. In addition to this we can work directly to enhance skills such as music, dance, speaking in public and horse riding etc.
The Technique can be a valuable and life-enhancing resource which gives us a gentle way to feel more at home in our bodies, deepens our awareness, helps us to learn and refine skills more effectively, and to look after ourselves and take care of our health. The changes which unfold from the sessions can have a surprisingly deep effect on how you feel and function: you begin to experience a new support from your postural system, resulting in an almost magical feeling of being held and carried by your body. This leads to greater mental and emotional peace and calm. As a result you feel less tense, more confident, and you have greater energy and vitality. Problems such as chronic pain and stress often improve or disappear entirely. The positive effects of the Alexander Technique have been validated by numerous scientific studies.
The Technique is particularly well know as a holistic approach to improving posture, balance and back pain. Because it affects how you look and feel in a positive way it is also great for improving confidence and self-expression. It is an excellent way to take care of yourself and maintain good functioning as you grow older. The Alexander Technique can be particularly helpful for performers, public speakers, and others who use a complex physical skill for enjoyment or to earn a living.
